Nest with Blue Pods

Did you know that this piece qualifies for FREE SHIPPING?

After making dozens of ceramic nests, there are only two large nests left available in this limited series. This once greets me as I walk into my studio and casts the most beautiful shadows when the morning sun comes through my studio door.

This nest has three blue slate colored pods that are fused to the bottom of the outer shell, the pods are visible but also shielded by the outer webbing.

All of the pieces in this series are hand-built, hand-carved and created with a unique process that fuses the inner pieces to the outer. They are made from high fired stoneware and each piece is original and unique.

Inspired by Nature

Even in the middle of these crazy winter storms we’ve been having, I try to get out into nature everyday. My dog Indy is my partner in crime for these adventures which can consist of an easy stroll along west cliff drive to long hikes into the redwoods or a road trip up the coast in search of empty beaches and washed up treasures. I usually share photos from these explorations on my Instagram feed (click the link to follow along) but thought I’d share a few here too.

The textures, colors, structures and compositions I try to capture these photos all follow me back into the studio and manifest themselves in some way into my clay forms. It can seem like a guilty pleasure to take a few hours each day for exploring and wandering when I could be in the studio building but I truly believe that without exploration there would be no inspiration.

Video: Packing for NCECA

Packing up the 200 pieces from my Hive Series to ship off to Portland is no small feat. Each piece is wrapped in bubble wrap, those pieces are boxed up, the boxes are crated up and the crate will get picked up and shipped off soon. Fingers crossed everything survives the journey. Can’t wait to see this piece installed as a part of The Evocative Garden NCECA 2017 exhibit at the Disjecta Contemporary Art Center.

Technical Difficulties

Technical Difficulties | the dirt | Jenni Ward ceramic sculptureBeing an artist, you need to wear many, many hats. Sometimes you need to wear them all at the same time, from maker to marketer, it can get tricky. This week, I spent 6+ days wearing my tech hat trying to get my website security certificate back on line. A few years ago I didn’t even know what an SSL certificate was but now I’m trying to fix one. This basically means that every time you purchase art off my site, your purchase is secure. For the past 6 days though if you visited my site, you got a scary blazing warning to go back if you want to avoid being hacked. This is not a good thing.

So sparing you the techy details, as of right now, all is safe again at jenniward.com, so feel free to buy art to your hearts content and know that your purchases are secure. Thanks for your patience if you visited my site over the past week.

Now, I will take my tech hat off and get back into maker mode. Yay!

Scouting New Locations

I was lucky to get a gap in the rain storms today to wander around the New Zealand gardens at the UCSC Arboretum looking for a location for a new installation I’ll be creating this Spring. This place has so much amazing eye candy, I can get absorbed into the tiniest seedpod or overwhelmed by the expansive eucalyptus grove. I love that part of my job is to get lost in places like this. The upcoming exhibit of environmental installations should be pretty amazing and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. Stay tuned for details about this show as things develop…
