Technical Difficulties

Technical Difficulties | the dirt | Jenni Ward ceramic sculptureBeing an artist, you need to wear many, many hats. Sometimes you need to wear them all at the same time, from maker to marketer, it can get tricky. This week, I spent 6+ days wearing my tech hat trying to get my website security certificate back on line. A few years ago I didn’t even know what an SSL certificate was but now I’m trying to fix one. This basically means that every time you purchase art off my site, your purchase is secure. For the past 6 days though if you visited my site, you got a scary blazing warning to go back if you want to avoid being hacked. This is not a good thing.

So sparing you the techy details, as of right now, all is safe again at jenniward.com, so feel free to buy art to your hearts content and know that your purchases are secure. Thanks for your patience if you visited my site over the past week.

Now, I will take my tech hat off and get back into maker mode. Yay!

Scouting New Locations

I was lucky to get a gap in the rain storms today to wander around the New Zealand gardens at the UCSC Arboretum looking for a location for a new installation I’ll be creating this Spring. This place has so much amazing eye candy, I can get absorbed into the tiniest seedpod or overwhelmed by the expansive eucalyptus grove. I love that part of my job is to get lost in places like this. The upcoming exhibit of environmental installations should be pretty amazing and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. Stay tuned for details about this show as things develop…

Take Aways: Art to Go!

Next week, I drop off artwork at Pajaro Valley Art Gallery for Take Aways: Art to Go! and I’ll be showing some new work from my Lichen Series. The image below is a prototype for the final pieces, I’ve been working on so you’ll have to come to the exhibit to see the real deal! The exhibit is a major fundraiser for PVAC and all work sold is immediately removed from the show and replaced with new work, so the exhibit is always changing. All work is created by local artists and is priced under $300, so come find some sweet deals at the show! Details below…

WIP: Starting New

Well, it’s been about 9 months since I’ve really starting building something new and I’m finding it hard to start up again. Over the past months, I’ve made new works with parts and pieces already created, I’ve doodled with new ideas and I’ve reconfigured installations to explore variations of composition but I haven’t really dove in full speed making new work until this week.

Honestly it’s kind of scary and daunting to start up again, but equally I love the thrill of the challenge. So below are a few images of what I’m working on and thinking about. Umbel flower structures, working in multiples, working with high temperature wire and creating a large scale outdoor installation are what’s on my mind. I guess we’ll see where this all ends up, let me know your thoughts…

Video: Carving Hive Series

I’m making a few extra pieces for my Hive Series installation which will be exhibited at the Disjecta Contemporary Art Center in Portland for NCECA 2017. There are about 200 pieces that make up this installation but just in case some don’t survive the shipping, I thought a few extra would be a good idea. Here’s a quick video of the carving process to make the ends have a web-like structural feel to them. It’s the most time consuming part of the whole process, but the results are pretty beautiful! A Year of Art Making

Happy New Year!

A Year of Art Making | the dirt | Jenni Ward ceramic sculptureTaking a moment to look back on 2016, it has definitely been the year of change for us.

We made plans to change our entire lifestyle when we said goodbye to our home and studio in Aptos and build out a new studio in Santa Cruz. We bought a van that we are converting into a tiny home for ourselves and in doing so, we have downsized our possessions but we’ve also upsized our opportunities for adventure and travel.

We lost many loved ones this year but we also gained a new community of supportive artists and friends that surround us daily.

Most importantly this year, we learned to follow our hearts in all of our choices. So despite the political climate and the craziness that is our current world, 2016 was pretty good to us and we are grateful. Thank you all for being a part of it!

To recap a year of art making, I started off 2016 with two In the Field installations, one from the Lichen Series and one from the Tide Pool Series. These photoshoots also evolved into videos documenting the process and then the pieces were brought back to the studio for reconfiguration into smaller compositions. The Lichen Series also had a well received showing at the USCS Arboretum ‘Sculpture’ exhibit. The Tide Pool Series sold out quicker than any other series, while the Lichen Series is still coming together in my studio. I love how a year later, I can still be thinking about these concepts and watch them evolve in my studio.

I was also invited to be a part of the Clay & Glass exhibit in Healdsburg and I created a site specific installation from my Bone Series which I think turned out fantastic. And I was invited to create an indoor and outdoor installation to help celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Sculpture IS: exhibition. Then after a spectacular summer of sculpture workshops for kids at the old studio, we packed up everything and moved to the new studio space on the westside. A ton of painting and cleaning and building in the space followed but we were able to launch the new space for Open Studios in October and have been plugging away with classes and art making ever since.

To top it off, being included in an issue of Ceramics Monthly and invited to participate in the NCECA exhibit for 2017 make me feel pretty good about this crazy art life I’ve chosen to live. Also, feeling lucky that my friends, family, art community and especially my husband Nate support me every step of the way.

Our plans for 2017 include lots of art making, lots of travel and lots of adventures- hope you are along for the ride!
