Here’s the monthly wrap up of everything going on at the studio…and because there’s sooo much going on, there will be a part 2 October Studio News reminder coming up in two weeks!
It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since we moved to the new studio space but this time last year we were painting the new studio while at the same time finishing up the last summer workshops at the old studio. While it will always be a work in progress, here’s a throwback to a year ago…
And a look at the studio today…
I also love that the timing worked out so that this move was documented in Ceramics Monthly’s Studio Visit article in the October issue. Sometimes, things fall into place when you least expect it. Moving can be hard and change can be challenging but we wouldn’t change a thing about moving to Mission Industrial Art Studios. Cheers to another year of being CR8IV!
Just a reminder!

Before I lived in Santa Cruz, I would visit my then boyfriend (now husband) on the weekends and I fell in love with Santa Cruz (and him) for its long walks along west cliff, hikes through the redwoods, the quirky fun of downtown and rides on the giant dipper. On one of my weekend visits, I was wandering around town by myself and couldn’t figure out what these bright green signs were all about. I followed the arrows which lead to a series of artist studios that were open to the public for the weekend. I didn’t know anything about the event but was so impressed with the artwork I saw and how many green signs were showing all over town. After asking around about the event, I realized that not only was Santa Cruz a beautiful, fun place to visit but it also had a serious art scene. Flash forward to what feels like a million years later and here I am with 12+ years of my own Open Studios Art Tour events under my belt and so proud to be part of the art community of Santa Cruz County.
So yes, Santa Cruz is about big waves and big trees and it’s about the accepting, compassionate community but a big part of the heart of Santa Cruz is about being an incredible art destination and that’s a reason to visit all in itself. The weekend of May 6 & 7th is no exception. It will be a beautiful weekend to visit Santa Cruz if you’re from out of town or to participate in your creative community if you’re a local. There are so many art events happening but still, there is enough time to take it all in.
Kick off the weekend at First Friday, with art events from Felton to Watsonville, many concentrated in the Santa Cruz downtown region. Saturday & Sunday you can join in on the fun at Ceram-A-Rama at the Santa Cruz Mountain Art Center, the Spring Art Market at the Tannery , the 17th Ave Artists Spring Art Show & Sale AND you can join me at Mission Industrial Studios for our Spring Studio Sale. There is A LOT of art to see, buy and share that weekend but I’m pretty sure that you can handle it!
Please click the links for details on each of these fantastic events and I hope to see you out there!
Thanks for supporting local artists and the arts!
We are so excited to be coming up on our 1 year anniversary at the new studio. We took over the space in May of 2016 and this year we are celebrating with an over the top of our Annual Spring Studio Sale! There are a million reasons why you should mark your calendars for this year’s event…
If you missed visiting the studio during Open Studios this past fall, this is your chance to check out the space, see new work by owner & artist Jenni Ward, Ceramic Art Hearts will be available and we will raffle off a small sculpture to a lucky winner!
Talented students from Earth Art Studio will be displaying work for sale, with a special green theme to this years group project. You can also sign up for a Summer Clay Workshop while you’re here! A self guided Seed Bomb making station will be set up to make a take home gift for Mother’s Day.
BUY ART and SHARE THE LOVE!
We donate 10% of all art sales at this event to The Homeless Garden Project of Santa Cruz!
As a special event this year, we will be hosting Nora Dougherty and her mobile art gallery, work.shop. at the studio. Nora will be showcasing her beautiful jewelry during the day and will be showing art movies around the campfire after sunset.
10 other artists in the complex will have their studios open to tour, ask questions and buy art! Some will be offering demos and hands on activities.
The work.shop. trailer will have art movies and marshmallows around the campfire from 8 – 9
Saturday May 6 1 – 9
Sunday May 7th 1 – 6

Looking forward to seeing you there!
Mission Industrial Studios Open for Spring Sale
May 6th & 7th | 1 – 6 with evening art activities May 6th from 6 -9
Eleven artists in the Mission Industrial Studio complex will open their studios to the public for a weekend of creativity. The artists will have works on display for sale and will be available to discuss their process, some will offer demos and have hands-on activities for visitors.
The eleven artists include, Jamie Abbott, Lucia Bruer, Barbara Downs, Nora Dougherty, Sefla Joseph, Joey Kochlacs, Majio, Kirk Mc Neill, Stacey Pollard, Susan Wagner & Jenni Ward. These studios are typically only open during the county wide Open Studios Art Tour in October and some rarely open to the public, making this weekend event a unique opportunity for the public to visit the artists in their work space. The artists range in medium from painting, to glass, to metal, wood and clay, offering something for everyone’s artistic taste. This event hopes to offer a creative experience for both locals and visitors to the Santa Cruz area.
The studios are located on the westside of Santa Cruz on Mission St extension between Swift St. and Natural Bridges Dr. and will be open on May 6 & 7, 2017 from 1 – 6 on Saturday and Sunday with additional art events from 6 – 9 on Saturday evening.
Highlights planned for the event include Nora Dougherty’s work.shop. trailer, a mobile art gallery on location, a clay seed bomb making activity at Jenni Ward’s earth art studio, and Kirk Mc Neill’s large scale sculpture the Sharky-Go-Round on display. Food Trucks AGoGo will be onsite in the late afternoon on Saturday offering tasty local tacos along with live music from The Dooners. After the sun sets, art movies around a campfire with marshmallows will round out Saturday’s activities.
