We know you have a lot of choices in your art events this weekend and we hope to see you at the Mission Industrial!
Before I lived in Santa Cruz, I would visit my then boyfriend (now husband) on the weekends and I fell in love with Santa Cruz (and him) for its long walks along west cliff, hikes through the redwoods, the quirky fun of downtown and rides on the giant dipper. On one of my weekend visits, I was wandering around town by myself and couldn’t figure out what these bright green signs were all about. I followed the arrows which lead to a series of artist studios that were open to the public for the weekend. I didn’t know anything about the event but was so impressed with the artwork I saw and how many green signs were showing all over town. After asking around about the event, I realized that not only was Santa Cruz a beautiful, fun place to visit but it also had a serious art scene. Flash forward to what feels like a million years later and here I am with 12+ years of my own Open Studios Art Tour events under my belt and so proud to be part of the art community of Santa Cruz County.
So yes, Santa Cruz is about big waves and big trees and it’s about the accepting, compassionate community but a big part of the heart of Santa Cruz is about being an incredible art destination and that’s a reason to visit all in itself. The weekend of May 6 & 7th is no exception. It will be a beautiful weekend to visit Santa Cruz if you’re from out of town or to participate in your creative community if you’re a local. There are so many art events happening but still, there is enough time to take it all in.
Kick off the weekend at First Friday, with art events from Felton to Watsonville, many concentrated in the Santa Cruz downtown region. Saturday & Sunday you can join in on the fun at Ceram-A-Rama at the Santa Cruz Mountain Art Center, the Spring Art Market at the Tannery , the 17th Ave Artists Spring Art Show & Sale AND you can join me at Mission Industrial Studios for our Spring Studio Sale. There is A LOT of art to see, buy and share that weekend but I’m pretty sure that you can handle it!
Please click the links for details on each of these fantastic events and I hope to see you out there!
Thanks for supporting local artists and the arts!
The Rock Candy Series has been installed In the Field at Joshua Tree, at the Pacific Edge Climbing Gym and encrusted on found driftwood as seen here. There are only a few of these pieces left in this series but I’ll be raffling this one off at this years Spring Studio Sale. All you have to do is sign up on my mailing list during the studio sale and you’re entered to win!
Looking forward to seeing you at the studio May 6th & 7th and maybe this beauty with my favorite red glaze could be yours!
About the Series:
The Rock Candy Series are inspired by the flow of water and how it shapes the land. The hard angled ceramic shapes juxtapose the curvy flow of natural forms to create a dynamic visual engagement. These colorful ceramic rock forms are intriguing objects whether mounted on the wall, in the garden or in small compositions on driftwood.

Mission Industrial Studios Open for Spring Sale
May 6th & 7th | 1 – 6 with evening art activities May 6th from 6 -9
Eleven artists in the Mission Industrial Studio complex will open their studios to the public for a weekend of creativity. The artists will have works on display for sale and will be available to discuss their process, some will offer demos and have hands-on activities for visitors.
The eleven artists include, Jamie Abbott, Lucia Bruer, Barbara Downs, Nora Dougherty, Sefla Joseph, Joey Kochlacs, Majio, Kirk Mc Neill, Stacey Pollard, Susan Wagner & Jenni Ward. These studios are typically only open during the county wide Open Studios Art Tour in October and some rarely open to the public, making this weekend event a unique opportunity for the public to visit the artists in their work space. The artists range in medium from painting, to glass, to metal, wood and clay, offering something for everyone’s artistic taste. This event hopes to offer a creative experience for both locals and visitors to the Santa Cruz area.
The studios are located on the westside of Santa Cruz on Mission St extension between Swift St. and Natural Bridges Dr. and will be open on May 6 & 7, 2017 from 1 – 6 on Saturday and Sunday with additional art events from 6 – 9 on Saturday evening.
Highlights planned for the event include Nora Dougherty’s work.shop. trailer, a mobile art gallery on location, a clay seed bomb making activity at Jenni Ward’s earth art studio, and Kirk Mc Neill’s large scale sculpture the Sharky-Go-Round on display. Food Trucks AGoGo will be onsite in the late afternoon on Saturday offering tasty local tacos along with live music from The Dooners. After the sun sets, art movies around a campfire with marshmallows will round out Saturday’s activities.

Congrats to Misia Buetens and Becky Schmauch for being the winners of our raffle at the 11th Annual Spring Studio Sale!
The Nest Series is about the balance between protecting and trapping. Each nest has an item that is exposed to the viewer through its outer shell but also shielded by its webbing. In some, the inner items are attempting to escape but are then left vulnerable to the elements. These pieces are hand-built, hand-carved and created with a process that fuses the inner pieces to the outer.
‘A Relationship with Earth’ A hardcover catalog of the artwork created by sculptor Jenni Ward from 2009 – 2011. This includes images of work from the Nest, Branch, Sprout and Hive Series.
Visit the studio at our next event for another chance to win raffle prizes!
A GIGANTIC Thank You to everyone who came out to support the arts at the
11th Annual Spring Studio Sale this past Saturday!
I loved catching up with past students, seeing current students selling their work and meeting new students who will be taking classes this summer. The studio table is now officially tagged by many Earth Art Studio students but I’d love to add more, so come by and sign the table!
The studio sale was a great success and we are able to donate nearly $100 from our combined art sales to the Homeless Garden Project of Santa Cruz. Students shared work that they had made over the past months alongside my own works- it was a fabulous exhibit! Our student project looked good enough to eat and the ceramic donuts were the hit of the show!
I also debuted work from my new Tide Pool Series which is now available in the online shop. A video and portfolio of the ‘In the Field’ images are also up on the website. Hope you enjoy the new work!
